Chapter Twelve

“No!” Lucy raced after Nikola, her wolf starting to surge forward. Trevor and Clinton called after her, but she ignored them.

Nikola couldn’t just tell her that she was pregnant with his child and then take off! She was still so confused! There was so much more that they had to talk about… but he was already gone.

Her baby kicked her in the liver several times and Lucy stumbled to a stop, wrapping her arms around her waist. Tears flooded her eyes, but the sounds of Clinton and Trevor coming after her made her wipe them away. She breathed deeply, forcing herself to physically calm. Her baby kept kicking her liver and she gently rubbed that spot while her brothers came up to either side of her. Trevor put an arm around her, looking concerned, while Clinton glared after Nikola.

“What was that about?” he asked.

Lucy shook her head. “He’s… going to try to help.” It was all she could get out without revealing the lump in her throat.

Turning, she looked back to where Eugene was calmly walking through the trees. Of course he was calm. He was a dragon. If they had tried to run—actually run—then he’d have just shifted to his dragon form and scooped them up. It wasn’t like they’d be able to free themselves when they were hundreds of feet above the forest.

Lucy eyed him warily as he got closer. “So what now?”

Her baby kicked once more and this time it wasn’t just her baby. It was Nikola’s baby and that knowledge drove the breath from her. She slumped into Trevor as her knees went weak. Clinton hurried to help her, and Eugene bent, looking concerned.

If he was that worried about her over this baby, why did he void his end of the contract?

“We need to get back to the Magnus Academy,” Eugene said. “As much to have you checked out and make sure that you’re alright as anything else. I can get you back there in three days if you want to fly.”

Nikola said to delay. Lucy swallowed. “Am I allowed to say no?”

Eugene nodded. “When I was sent on this mission I was told to use my discretion. I don’t believe that you’re going to try to run.”

Well, he was right about that. Clinton and Trevor would go with her, putting themselves in jeopardy. They had a mate and a baby at home. She couldn’t lead them into something that would end up with them being on the wrong side of the law. So, no running. But how much time did Nikola need?

“I don’t want to fly,” she said slowly, straightening as her strength returned. “I hate it. I can’t even stand planes, and a dragon… I’d rather you not be anywhere near me.”

Eugene took a respectful step back, surprising her. She hadn’t expected him to be so accommodating. Not because he was a dragon. Even though she had terrible experiences with dragons, she knew better than to paint them all with the same brush. No, she had expected him to be more of a hardass because he was military.
